Flute Choir with narrator
This work is program music based on the poem Evangeline by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. It contains 6 parts and the performance time is about 25 min. The music should be performed with a male narrator.
This piece was first performed in February 1993 at the University of Portland.
This work, commissioned by the Oregon Music Teachers Association and the Music Teachers National Association in conjunction with the 1994 Composer of the Year Award, is a suite of 6 movements. The titles of the sections are Shock, Denial, Mood Swings, Depression, Acceptance, and Triumph. On June 3, 1993, our eldest son was diagnosed with cancer. "Journey Through a Shadow" was written to express, through music, the feelings and emotional stages the composer experienced during his treatment throughout that summer and fall. The second purpose for this choice of subjects is to express for all persons who have had cancer themselves, or who have been close to the disease through a loved one, moods which the composer believes are universal.
