Lord Jesus, You Are With Me

This intermediate anthem is written for SATB with piano accompaniment. The form is ternary with a lyrical first section, a hymn of praise in the middle section, and a triumphant affirmation of faith in the final section that gives all voice parts the opportunity to shine. The words stress God’s great love for us at all times even when life is not easy. Written at a time when the composer faced serious surgery, the words were a gift from God. They brought comfort during that time, and others have reported being touched by them.

Lord Jesus... was performed in February 1998 at Evergreen Presbyterian Church and in June 2000 at Bethany Presbyterian Church as a piano solo.

Christmas Story

An intermediate piece, Christmas Story is scored for SATB and flute with piano accompaniment and optional English Handbells (three or four octave). It relates the story of the birth of Jesus Christ, including the appearance of the star and the visit of the shepherds. The form is strophic, with transitions moving the singers from one key to another as the story unfolds. The varied texture alternates individual voices with a tutti choir or with the flute and/or handbells or piano. If handbells are unavailable, the piano plays their part.

Christmas Story was performed by the Evergreen Presbyterian Church choir in 1995, by the Conchords Chorale at the Grotto in 1996, and by the Bethany Presbyterian Church Chancel Choir in 2000.

Evergreen Psalm Series

This collection of six selected settings of Psalms (19, 33, 46, 47, 100, and 150) for children, youth, and congregations may be accompanied by piano or guitar. One of the selections, Rejoice in the Lord (Psalm 33), has also been scored for SATB (see below). The series was written to help the children of Evergreen Presbyterian Church learn the words to a few psalms. Five of the six songs are spirited, and three allow the singers to clap. The vocal range mostly stays within the octave from middle C to the C above, with only an occasional high D. The song which is not spirited, God is our Strength, was used as a prayer response by the Chancel Choir of Bethany Presbyterian Church.

ORGAN SOLO

Cast Your Cares on the Lord

Inspriation for this meditation for organ comes from Psalm 55:22: "Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous fall." The music is of intermediate difficulty and is mildly twentieth-century in sound.

Piano teacher Grace Feldman writes about Cast Your Cares on the Lord,

I enjoy playing this organ piece; it lies comfortably under hands and feet. I feel that it expresses the text nicely. I think Jan Mittelstaedt has written organ music that is well worth learning and I plan to use it often.
